Quantitative Strategies

A Short Course

Themes

There is much more to understanding a quantitative argument than mere comprehension of the statistical procedures involved. To critically engage with such arguments, attention must be directed less toward the mathematics itself and more toward the fundamental assumptions underlying the data and the associated inference procedures.

This course is suitable for individuals who frequently encounter numbers and quantitative claims and wish to engage more deeply with the related debates, without necessarily having formal training in statistics or mathematics. It does not aim to teach quantitative techniques per se; rather, it demonstrates how quantitative arguments can be more effectively interpreted and evaluated from philosophical perspectives.

The course is organised into fifteen sessions (excluding orientation and concluding sessions), each session centered on a reading, illustrated with cases from social, technological, and environmental studies, Quantitative Strategies is open to participants from any discipline.

For whom

  • Will be useful for anyone keen on comprehending and critiquing quantitative arguments;
  • Will not teach the technical tools of quantitative inference, but will instead focus on understanding the assumptions underlying data and methodologies;
  • Will focus on selected readings from diverse topics related to society, technology, economics, and the environment;
  • Will enable professionals as well as students from any field to augment their expertise with philosophical perspectives on quantitative tools.
